Despite advancements in technology, your body is still hard wired to perform at its peak when you eat similar foods to what your early ancestors ate.  It's in your DNA.  Studies have been around for many decades that indicate that diets high in sugars, ~ especially those from highly refined and processed carbohydrates with a high glycemic load ~ are the primary cause of excess fat and weight gain ~ as our body's have not really adapted physiologically  to the high levels of carbohydrate consumption people now consume.

 In a nut shell, there is much more evidence (that sadly has often been overlooked, or intentionally dismissed) that indicates it is excess carbohydrate consumption, including excesses of the so-called healthy carbs like whole grains and grain products that causes spikes in insulin, potentially leading to insulin resistance, excessive weight gain that is difficult to lose, hypo or hyperglycemia (diabetes), and inflammation that is the root of  many other health issues.  

There never was solid evidence that saturated fat was the true villain it's been made out to be.  Studies indicated that red meat can lead to cancer or other health issues were conducted on highly processed meats.  Livestock that is traditionally raised entirely on pasture, in integrated farming systems, is among the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat.

Powerful lobby groups and massive propaganda campaigns vilified the very foods our ancestors thrived on for hundreds, if not hundreds of thousands of years prior to the Industrial and even Agricultural Revolutions.

Contrarily, unconsciously eating modern processed, synthetic, and refined foods while sitting long hours in front of a computer, or texting on the phone is a recipe for dis-ease, pain, stiffness,  loss of mobility, and premature aging.  Not to mention weight gain.

Don and I have experienced this first hand.  Despite how healthy our 'produce-rich, whole-foods, plant-based macrobiotic diet' appeared on paper, when plugged into a nutritional analysis site like Cronometer.com, we experienced many set backs and declining health after following that approach for over five years.  



Kind of a bummer.  It was quite an investment of our time, energy, and finances to have made at a time in our lives ~ late 40s to mid 50s ~ where health issues can take much longer to correct.  

We were eating that way to correct health issues we believed were caused by the meat and fat of our previous paleo diet, and finally now understand that it wasn't the meat and fat.  It was the level of 'healthy' carbohydrates we were still consuming, in the form of a lot of sweet potatoes, winter squashes, and fruits, coupled with a lack of the understanding we now have of the roles of fat, especially fats from animal products, protein and glucose all have on blood sugar balance.

Upon completing a certification course in plant-based nutrition  with T.Colin Campbell offered through e-Cornell, and  to be a macrobiotic counselor with David at Macrobiotics America, while simultaneously  writing several books about eating a healthy, plant-based, macrobiotic diet, we changed our way of eating.

After five plus years of eating an entirely plant-based vegan diet, filled with lots and lots of dark leafy greens, and a variety of land and sea vegetables, beans, and whole grains, we just were not feeling all that great.  We did some more research, and returned to an updated version of the paleo diet we had been eating prior to going vegan.

I invested a lot of my life force into sustaining that lifestyle!  And I'm still changing course.  Why?  Because I'm not doing this just for profit.  I want to help myself and others feel their best, despite the fallout after changing course.

I've written about our health history and process in my books, so I won't bore you here.  Suffice it to say, we learned many lessons along the way.

We realize now that we could have made some simple tweaks to our diet while paleo that could have made all the difference, however we fell for the anti-meat propaganda that has been foisted upon us all now for decades.  We trusted many of the prominent plant-based doctors and advocates, and believed we needed to remove all animal products to turn around potentially pre-cancerous symptoms we were both experiencing.

The only constant in life is change.  Your body, moods, and energy also fluctuate continually throughout the day, and throughout the year.  The cycles of the moon and seasonal changes impact our moods and energy.  Some are more sensitive to these daily, monthly, and seasonal fluctuations than others.  

Cravings  change to match the season.  When it is hot out, you probably crave more cool, big, juicy fruit, and raw foods.  When it is cold out, you may desire more warming foods and spices, and longer cooking techniques, such as slow-cooked stews and soups.  You are naturally attracted to what will provide balance, without giving it much thought.  

However, if you are eating foods that are not harmonized with the season, and your particular needs, such as a lot of cold, raw fruit and salads during the cold season, you will be operating in discord to what is more natural for that season.  

Many people feel their best when they eat foods similar to their own ancestry.  Knowing the primary staples of your ancestors ~ which for most of us included fish and animal foods ~ may help shape your food choices.  

Whether you are more inclined to beef or pork, or fish and seafood, for example, may have a lot to do with the region your forebears once lived, and the primary food staples of that region. You have genetic predisposition, and have been physiologically adapted to certain foods based on ancestral and cultural heritage.  

This is the core teachings of Chinese medicine, (European) macrobiotic principles, and our low-carb diet coaching philosophy.  It's part physiology, and part paying homage to the unbroken chain of life from whence you come!
