Gluten-Free Diet Linked to HIgh Blood Arsenic Levels

A study of individuals who self-reported following a gluten-free diet found that they have significantly higher concentrations of total urinary arsenic and cadmium and higher total blood mercury than people not following gluten-free diets. The urinary total arsenic was nearly double among those on a gluten-free diet, compared to those not on a gluten freed diet.

Rice is a potential source of both arsenic and mercury exposure. It is possible that people who are avoiding gluten are getting excessive exposure to arsenic and mercury through higher consumption of rice-based products.

If you do not have properly diagnosed celiac disease or gluten intolerance, it is wise to consume a mix of starchy whole foods including gluten-containing grains such as wheat, barley, and rye.

George Hackenschmidt's Resonance With Macrobiotics

George Hackenshmidt (1877-1968) was an early 20th century Estonian strongman and professional wrestler who is recognized as the world's first heavyweight world wrestling champion.

In his book The Way To Live, Hackenschmidt has some interesting things to say about diet in relationship to strength and health.

In regard to the relation between diet and strength, he wrote:

"It is not my intention to discuss here the old problem, whether meat is necessary as food for man or whether man was created and should remain a vegetarian. My experience has taught me that foodstuffs are of secondary importance. There are very strong people who are strict vegetarians, whilst others eat a good deal of meat."
